How a robot mower keeps your lawn tidy
A robotic mower cuts little and often — typically every day or two — trimming a few millimetres each time and returning the clippings to the lawn as a fine mulch. The result is a consistently neat finish and a healthier sward without the need to collect grass. The mower returns to its charging station automatically.
Boundary wire or wire-free navigation
Traditional robots follow a perimeter wire pegged or buried around the lawn. Newer wire-free models, such as the Husqvarna Automower wire-free range and the LUBA and NovaBot machines we stock, use satellite positioning and on-board sensors to map the garden instead, which makes installation simpler and lets you adjust zones from an app.
- Measure your lawn area and check it is within the model’s rated coverage
- Note the steepest slope — different models handle different gradients
- Count separate lawn areas and narrow passages between them
- Check Wi-Fi or mobile coverage if you want app control
Where robots work best
Open lawns with few obstacles are ideal. Gardens with many narrow strips, loose gravel edges or steep banks need more careful planning. Keep small items such as toys and hoses off the lawn, and consider a garage or cover for the charging station to protect it from the weather.
